A Snow Day Tradition - Chocolate Gravy

A Snow Day Tradition – Chocolate Gravy

Our family has a snow day tradition that stretches back to Mr. KnoxFoodie's grandmother. Anytime the kids were out of school for a snow day and after a long morning of sledding, Mammaw Gladys would have a big batch of Chocolate Gravy waiting to warm everyone up. Mr. Knoxfoodie's mom continued the tradition on to her children and grandchildren. And since we are iced in here in East Tennessee, it seems a perfect day to bring out this family favorite for Mrs. KnoxFoodie. All you really need is some cocoa, milk and sugar! Serve Chocolate Gravy with your favorite hot biscuits. We make homemade, but it is equally delicious with canned biscuits.

  1. 1 ¼ Cups Milk
  2. 1 Cup Sugar
  3. 2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
  4. 2 Tbsp AP Flour
  5. Pinch of salt
  6. 1 lump of butter* (see note)
  1. In a saucepan, bring milk to boil over medium-high heat. Mix dry ingredients together. As milk boils, slowly stir in dry ingredients. Cook 2-5 minutes until mixture becomes slightly thick. Remove from heat and stir in butter. Serve with hot biscuits.
  1. * As per our mammaw's instructions, use a 'lump' of butter. If you aren't from East Tennessee, you may not know what a lump is. So use about 2 tablespoons.
